Sister Joseph Alphonsus (Jo) Dederichs, CCVI (1923 - 2017)
Sister Joseph Alphonsus (Jo) Dederichs, CCVI dedicated 40 years of her life to teaching English, speech, and drama in the Congregation’s schools in Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas. She found her passion for painting in her mid-20s. A 2007 article from Today’s Catholic stated that Sister Jo “decided to visit the [Incarnate Word Academy] art teacher’s studio to ‘just try things out’ and wound up enrolling in an off-campus art class.”
Sister Jo suffered a stroke in 2005 that left the right side of her body paralyzed. During rehabilitation, Sister taught herself how to paint with her nondominant left hand. This display includes two of Sister Jo’s watercolor paintings of hummingbirds: one was painted before her stroke in 2001, the other in 2009 after her stroke.
Sister spoke of her passion for creating art, stating, “You don’t know how happy it makes me to do this. I just love to do it.”

Sor Joseph Alphonsus (Jo) Dederichs, CCVI, dedicó 40 años de su vida a la enseñanza del inglés, la oratoria y el teatro en las escuelas de la Congregación en Luisiana, Misuri y Texas. Descubrió su pasión por la pintura a mediados de los veinte años. Un artículo de 2007 de Today's Catholic afirmaba que la hermana Jo «decidió visitar el estudio del profesor de arte de la [Incarnate Word Academy] para «probar cosas» y terminó inscribiéndose en una clase de arte fuera del campus».
La hermana Jo sufrió un derrame cerebral en 2005 que le dejó paralizada la parte derecha del cuerpo. Durante la rehabilitación, la hermana aprendió por sí misma a pintar con su mano izquierda, que no es la dominante. Esta exposición incluye dos acuarelas de colibríes pintadas por la hermana Jo: una fue pintada antes de su derrame cerebral en 2001 y la otra en 2009, después del derrame.
La hermana habló de su pasión por crear arte y afirmó: «No sabes lo feliz que me hace hacer esto. Me encanta hacerlo».
