Mexican Sister Artists / Artistas Hermanas Mexicanas
Sor Rosa María Montiel y Castellanos, CCVI was born on February 19, 1931 in Puebla, Mexico. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word (CCVI) in 1947, took her first vows in 1950, and made her final profession in 1955.
Sor Rosa María studied Interior Design at Instituto Miguel Ángel in Mexico City from 1956 to 1959. Following the completion of her degree, she served as the director of the Interior Decoration Department from 1959 to 1980. She carried out numerous design projects during this time, including designing chapels for the Colegio Saltillense, Colegio Mier y Pesado, Colegio Central de Puebla, and Casa Betania.
Sor Rosa María said that she made around 60 paintings during her life, but gave most of them away as gifts. While reflecting on her artistic career, Sor remarked, “My career was a wonderful because it allowed me to fulfill myself as a religious and as someone steeped in art, where I see God through my art. I am grateful to my Congregation for allowing me to develop my studies in different ways, teaching painting and other subjects such as Sacred Scripture.”

Sor Rosa María Montiel y Castellanos, CCVI nació el 19 de febrero de 1931 en Puebla, México. Ingresó en la Congregación de las Hermanas de la Caridad del Verbo Encarnado (CCVI) en 1947, hizo sus primeros votos en 1950 y profesó sus votos perpetuos en 1955.
Sor Rosa María estudió Diseño de Interiores en el Instituto Miguel Ángel de la Ciudad de México de 1956 a 1959. Tras completar su licenciatura, fue directora del Departamento de Decoración de Interiores de 1959 a 1980. Durante este tiempo llevó a cabo numerosos proyectos de diseño, entre ellos el diseño de capillas para el Colegio Saltillense, el Colegio Mier y Pesado, el Colegio Central de Puebla y la Casa Betania.
Sor Rosa María dijo que pintó alrededor de 60 cuadros a lo largo de su vida, pero que regaló la mayoría de ellos. Al reflexionar sobre su carrera artística, Sor comentó: «Mi carrera fue maravillosa porque me permitió realizarme como religiosa y como persona inmersa en el arte, donde veo a Dios a través de mi arte. Estoy agradecida a mi Congregación por permitirme desarrollar mis estudios de diferentes maneras, enseñando pintura y otras materias como la Sagrada Escritura».
Sor María del Carmen (Carmelita) Hernández Treviño, CCVI was born on February 6, 1939, in Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 1956, took her first vows in 1959, and made her final profession in 1964.
Sor Carmelita served in a variety of ministries: several schools in Mexico, campus ministry, retreats and spiritual direction, and social ministry in San Antonio and Missouri. Sister Francine Keane wrote about her service as a spiritual director at Inner City on the West Side of San Antonio from November 2015 to February 2016: “She loved spending time with the homeless every morning as they sat outside enjoying their sandwich and coffee. She shared her special gift of painting and color combinations with the children in the After‐School Program. They loved her class and were very sad when she left to answer a call to share another of her special gifts as Spiritual Director with the participants in the Oblate Program, Ministry to Ministers.”
Sor Carmelita also served as Director of the Novitiate in Mexico and as a member of the CCVI General Leadership Team. She was one of the first Sisters to go to Mongu, Zambia to establish a new CCVI mission. She served in community ministry in Zambia from 2008 to 2011. Sor María del Carmen passed away in Mexico City on November 1, 2016.

Sor Carmelita prestó servicio en diversos ministerios: varias escuelas en México, pastoral universitaria, retiros y dirección espiritual, y pastoral social en San Antonio y Misuri. La hermana Francine Keane escribió sobre su servicio como directora espiritual en Inner City, en el lado oeste de San Antonio, desde noviembre de 2015 hasta febrero de 2016: «Le encantaba pasar tiempo con las personas sin hogar cada mañana, mientras se sentaban fuera a disfrutar de su sándwich y su café. Compartía su don especial para la pintura y las combinaciones de colores con los niños del programa extraescolar. A ellos les encantaban sus clases y se entristecieron mucho cuando se marchó para responder a la llamada de compartir otro de sus dones especiales como directora espiritual con los participantes en el programa Oblate, Ministerio para Ministros».
Sor Carmelita también fue directora del noviciado en México y miembro del equipo de liderazgo general de CCVI. Fue una de las primeras hermanas en ir a Mongu, Zambia, para establecer una nueva misión CCVI. Prestó servicio en el ministerio comunitario en Zambia de 2008 a 2011. Sor María del Carmen falleció en la Ciudad de México el 1 de noviembre de 2016.
